For our school project, we created an intervention which took place in front of our Academy; Willem De Kooning Academy at Rotterdam Blaak. Our main focus was climate change which will cause a longer period of rainfall in the future.

Now, after rain, we can see puddles. In the future, there will be flooded squares and streets. We do not have enough green areas moreover the main building material used in Rotterdam is concrete, which makes it difficult for water to be absorbed into the ground.

In our project, we made a huge puddle of water and create a path made of wooden letters which said: “ The path to the future is green”. In fact, this path was illustrating the way we need to pass to reach to the future. This way can be difficult and slippery but not impossible. Everyone needs to join in as an individual and collectively we can reach to our mission.

During four hours of intervention, around 60 people, Random people, and also students who wanted to go to school got curious about our project. Some of them were just looking at the puddle and they did not dare to participate but the rest(around 40 people) showed some reactions. Some of them, most people between 25-50 years old were eager to know about it and asked some questions. Around 30 people of this group participated and stepped through the letters.

We got different reactions. Some young people found it dangerous to go through the puddle, some others were worried about their socks to get wet and some of them did not care about it and decided to choose another way to pass and a few people got angry for the barrier in front of them and try to tear the tapes next to the puddle apart. But we are glad to say most of the people passing by had positive reactions, like the woman who was working at the building close to the location and just curiosity persuaded her to come out as a break and ask about it.

The intervention was in two parts. The first part was about awareness and then the second part was about activation. After passing through the puddle There was a basket with some packages included moss and the recipe to make moss graffiti. So it was kind of present for the people who participated and then motivate them to start making their own vertical green walls.

We hope you enjoyed the video and help us to accomplish this mission.
